  • I've been teaching private music lessons for over 20 years. In October of 2008 I found a wonderful space for a music studio, and Tartan Tundra Music was born.

    Instruments taught:

    Violin/Fiddle:in many styles including Classical, Celtic, Old Timey, Alaskan, International (Russian, Scandinavian, Eastern European) and more.

    Mandolin: Mainly in Old Timey and Celtic styles, but the mandolin is just as versatile as the violin and can be used in many wonderful kinds of music.

    Guitar: Folk, rock, oldies, Celtic... Ukulele: One of the most amusing and fun instruments ever! And great for beginners of all ages!

    Viola: A viola is larger than a violin with a lovely, deep sound, but the method of playing is the same as violin.

    Bodhrán: Irish drum. There is an art to this, it isn't just whacking away on a drum head. Fun and interesting.

    Vocal Coaching: I can help you get your voice out in the open and help you sing.

Take Music Lessons via Skype, Facetime or Google

  • Taking Distance Lessons
    Distance Lessons are $36 per half hour, and $54 for 45 minutes. Lessons are taken via various apps such as Facetime, Zoom, or Google Meet. I prefer FaceTime for the quality and ease of use, but there are many ways to connect. You must have a web camera and have the app for one of on your computer, laptop, tablet or phone. Also, please let me know which one you want to use!

Long Distance Lessons Now via Skype

Skype is a free long distance telephone and video-conference service. Let me say that again: Skype is a FREE video-conference service!

I know that many of my students moved away wishing that they could still take lessons with me. In addition, I know there are folks out in the bush who don't have access to a music teacher. In fact I'm sure that there are lots of people who are far away who would enjoy learning to play a musical instrument, or get vocal coaching.

I've been teaching via video-conference for four years now. You'd be amazed how much you can learn.

Stay tuned and pass the word around: Jean McDermott is offering lessons via Skype. You'll need a computer with broadband, and a video camera and a microphone. My camera has a microphone built-in. Yours probably does, too.

I expect to be ready as of February 15, but book your lesson time now because there are physical logistics to this on  my end and it would help to hit the ground running in Feburary. Download Skype and start learning how to use it. It's a brilliant program.  I can't wait to get started!

Learn to Play Music in 2010

We had a lovely recital on December 14. Our big group piece was Carol of the Bells and it was so much fun! Not everyone has a chance to play in an orchestra, and this was definitely orchestral, with guitars, a mandolin, and many violins. As soon as I find the right translator, I'll be able to post the video.

Some of my students both in elementary and high school are beginning to compose music and songs. This is quite exciting for all concerned! Few realize how a melody can be grown from a few notes, how it can take hold and send out shoots, becoming a musical phrase, and before you know it, with proper nurturing and care, sends up branches and leave and becomes an entire tune! And it all comes from a small seed. Amazing.

There are still lesson times open for new students, or returning former students. I'd be happy to help you nurture the seed of music you have, or help you  branch out into another instrument. Or just start from scratch, no previous musical experience is required, just a desire to have fun and learn.

I'll call the library and set the date for the Spring Recital soon. I can't wait to see what the students will come up with next!
